But existing collision avoidance systems are unreliable, failing to recognize critical hazards due to the technical limitations of radar and image recognition. Radar systems fail to register slow-moving or stationary objects, causing accidents with everyday obstacles like parked cars and trucks. Image recognition systems often fail to recognize objects in unusual lighting or other rare contexts, causing accidents with everyday obstacles right in their path that go “unseen.”

Ghost is developing a 360° collision avoidance system capable of handling obstacles regardless of object speed or object type, in any size, shape or lighting condition. Based on the same processing functions as the human visual cortex, Ghost combines high-definition perception and relative motion to detect any potential obstacle in your path and accurately predict time to contact. Critically, like the human eye (but unlike existing systems), Ghost does not need to specifically identify an object to avoid it – animals darting across the road, appliances falling off of trucks or oddly shaped trailers are all simply understood as solid objects to be avoided.

The number one cause of accidents is misperception. People are easily distracted - by phones, GPS, other vehicles or passengers - and can be slow to react to oncoming danger. Car accidents are still a leading cause of death for people under 55. Where people fall short, existing driver assistance systems have done little to help solve the problem. Existing systems regularly miss critical obstacles and instead rely on drivers to intervene.

With fallbacks at multiple levels, the Real Self-Driving system can continue to drive safely even in the case of unexpected driving scenarios or mechanical failures. Even in the unlikely event of multiple component failures, the Ghost Fail-Safe System is a completely independent backup driver that will bring the car to a controlled and safe stop.

Existing driver assistance and self-driving systems are not equipped to handle all of these scenarios on their own, instead relying on the driver to intervene at a moment’s notice.

Ghost’s Real Self-Driving system is designed with fallbacks at multiple levels so the car can continue to drive safely even in the case of unexpected driving scenarios or mechanical failures. Every level of the system has a backup to maintain uninterrupted driving, from multiple cameras, computers and cables in hardware to additional layers in the runtime, perception and driving models of the software stack.

In the unlikely event of multiple component failures, the Ghost Fail-Safe System is a completely independent system that can operate the vehicle without depending on any of the other Ghost cameras, cables or computers. The sole function of the Ghost Fail-Safe System is to bring the car to a controlled and safe stop, protecting the driver and passengers.

Ghost’s CTO Volkmar Uhlig architected the L4 Pistachio Microkernel, which protects biometric data on billions of Apple and Android devices worldwide and is a predecessor to the world’s first formally verified operating system kernel.

As a result, their systems are designed to fail, requiring driver intervention every time they encounter simple irregularities.
